4 Merry Reasons to Head to Uptown Athens for the Holidays

The buildings lining Court Street are already aglow with their holiday finest, but that’s just the beginning of this most wonderful time of year. Consider yourself cordially invited to Athens’ Uptown for the Holidays, a month-long celebration of the season, complete with wagon rides, gingerbread, music and so much more. Below are four festive reasons why this is the perfect time of year to head Uptown.

Santa in Uptown Athens

#1: Welcome Santa to Town. Santa makes his jolly way to Athens on December 3 for the annual Tree Lighting Celebration. Gather at the Athens Armory to officially light the city’s Christmas tree, enjoy carols from the University Singers, tour Uptown Athens on a horse-drawn wagon, and say hi to Santa as he takes up temporary residence in Athens! You can find him at the 5 on Court Building for the tree lighting as well as December 10 and 17.

#2: See Athens in Gingerbread. Local bakers of all ages have whipped up fantastical creations of Athens-area structures using gingerbread and icing for their building materials. This year, you can find all of these confections under one roof: the Athens County Historical Society and Museum. One visit will remind you why this really is the sweetest time of the year.

#3: Take in Your Favorite Holiday Film. The Athena Cinema is bringing your favorite holiday movie back to its big-screen glory for their Holiday Film Series. Each Saturday through December 19, the movie buffs at the Athena are screening a carefully-selected holiday classic, and the best part? The price of your admission is a canned or nonperishable food item that gets donated to Athens city food pantries.
