Relish in the cool weather and experience all the family fun autumn is bringing to Athens County this month. It’s the season for pumpkin-patch adventures and roasted seeds galore that culminates with the famous haunted happenings of Halloween.
Jerseyville Festival, 10/10
Try your hand at making apple butter and old-time games during the 11th Annual Jerseyville Festival! Kid-friendy activities and local music start and 10 a.m. and continue all day long.
Appalachian Color in the Hills Festival, 10/10 – 10/11
Enjoy the cool, crisp days of fall this weekend in charming Glouster during the Appalachian Color in the Hills Fest. Kid-friendly activities include games, crafts and cookie and pumpkin decorating. Of course, it wouldn’t be a fall festival without a plethora of food carts and free entertainment throughout the weekend.
The Homecoming Parade guarantees showers of candy and freebies as organizations decorate their brightly-colored floats with lively actors and beaming smiles. Families and groups hoping to watch the parade should arrive early to secure a prime viewing spot. Ohio University’s Marching 110 is making an appearance and you can expect them to rattle the bricks up and down Court Street with a thunderous show.
Ohio Smoked Meat and Barbecue Festival, 10/16 – 10/17
Take in the sights, smells, and of course tastes of the best BBQ and smoked meats Ohio has to offer. Bonus: you get to enjoy all this delectable food on the Historic Nelsonville Public Square!
Hocking Valley Scenic Railway Autumn Trains, 10/17 & 10/18
The Hocking Valley Scenic Railway is a must-do family adventure if you’re in Athens County for the weekend. The trains running on October 17 & 18 are extra special because they are slated to be pulled by the organization’s newly-restored steam locomotive! This will be the first time in 50 years the engine will be in service and the first time in 20 years a steam engine will wind its way through the Hocking Valley. Pair this with beautiful fall color and you’re guaranteed a weekend of happy memories.
Walking Tour of The Ridges, 10/18
Discover what life was like for patients and residents of the former Athens Asylum, now known as The Ridges. The Athens County Historical Society‘s knowledgeable guide (and former asylum employee) will direct you throughout the grounds as you learn about the important role the asylum played in Athens County’s history.
Gather up your little ghosts and ghouls for a frighteningly good time on the Nelsonville Public Square during this month’s Final Friday. Enter the costume contest and explore the galleries, art shops, stores and other businesses on the square.
