A Look Back 2015: Our Top Moments

Time flies, especially when your 2015 was as eventful as ours was! From being recognized in national publications to celebrating milestone anniversaries, Athens had a memorable 365 days. Here are a few top highlights reminisce on before we ring in the New Year!

  1. Athens was featured on USAToday.com three times in 2015
    Athens was named one of the best spots in the US to catch a glimpse of beautiful fall foliage. It is also home to one of the Best Train Tours in America, the Hocking Valley Scenic Railway. Last stop–one of America’s most unique miniature golf courses, the Putt People First Miniature Golf Course!
  2. Ohio Brew Week
    The 10th annual Ohio Brew Week took place in July, and although a bit rainy, was a huge success that featured 25 Ohio craft breweries and more than 50 quine craft brews. This year’s keynote speaker was Patrick Conway, co-founder of Great Lakes Brewing Company, which was Ohio’s first craft brewery. Visitors also attended the Rock-N-Roast, a Homebrew Competition, the Brew BQ and The Last Call Street Festival.
  1. Quilt National
    The 19th annual international Quilt National, a juried competition and exhibit with more than 70 quilts from 85 quilters from around the world, was held at the Dairy Barn and took place from May 23 through September 7. The exhibit showcased innovative trends in the medium of layered and stitched fabric.
  2. Nelsonville Music Festival
    The 11th annual Nelsonville Music Festival took place at the end of May and brought well-known artists like The Flaming Lips, Merle Haggard, St. Vincent and Brandi Carlile. Preparations are well underway for the 12th annual NMF. Randy Newman, The Tallest Man on Earth, Marc Demarco and Angel Olsen are already confirmed for 2016.

  3. The Little B Inn, Nelsonville
    Nelsonville got even more charming with the addition of The Little B Inn, a lovely guest house just off the Historic Nelsonville Square.
  1. Fairfield Inn & Suites, Athens
    Just in time for Ohio University’s spring graduation, the Fairfield Inn & Suites Athens opened and further expanded guests’ options to stay in Athens.
  1. Bluetique
    The retail options in Athens expanded with the opening of Bluetique, a fashion-forward boutique clothing store.

  1. Little Fish and Devil’s Kettle, Athens Newest Breweries
    Two new craft breweries opened in Athens: Devil’s Kettle specializes in session beers like their popular Eric the RED while Little Fish focuses on farmhouse ales, including Lil’ Harvey’s Milk Stout. These two breweries, along with the expansion of Jackie O’s Taproom lead to Athens being named a Top Beer City by Livability.com.
  1. OMG! Rotisserie
    Athens County is now home to Southern-style cooking, thanks to OMG! Rotisserie. The restaurant on Columbus Road features locally sourced chicken cooked to perfection, along with soul food staples like collard greens and gumbo. Be sure to leave room for dessert; the banana pudding is a must!

  1. Santa’s Workshop and Christmas Store
    Just in time for the holidays, Santa’s Workshop and Christmas Store opened on the Nelsonville Square. They’re open year-round and not only offer plenty of Christmas goodies, but loads of other specialty items as well.
  2. Sol Restaurant Expanded to East State Street
    Sol Restaurant added a second location and plenty more menu options. The new restaurant’s warm and inviting atmosphere is seconded only to their inspired Cuban cuisine.

2015 was a fantastic year and we can’t wait to see what 2016 has in store for Athens, Ohio! What was your favorite moment from this year?
