Looking for a Labor Day getaway this holiday weekend? Head to Athens County for the perfect way to rest over the long weekend.

Friday: Relax and Unwind

After finishing the work week, celebrate by checking into one of our convenient hotels, cozy cabins, or quaint bed and breakfasts.  Relax and familiarize yourself with the area before hitting the town for a night out.

Recharge over dinner at one of Athens County’s many locally-owned restaurants that source their ingredients from nearby farms. Not sure which restaurants emphasize the flavors of our region? Look for the 30 Mile Meal logo and you’ll know you’re in locavore heaven.

Unwind and let loose and dance dinner off during Superawesome Free Dance Night at Casa Nueva Restaurant and Cantina, or check out live music at The Union Bar and Grill. End the evening at one of Athens’ breweries, distilleries, and wineries.

Saturday: Ohio University Bobcats Football

It’s #GameDayInAthens! Celebrate the upcoming fall football season and cheer on the Ohio University Bobcat football team in the season opener versus Texas State. Alumni, students, and families make up the Best Fans in the MAC. Celebrate touchdowns and don’t miss the first game performance by The Most Exciting Band in the Land, The Marching 110. Call 800-575-2287 for tickets or click here.

Before and after the game, explore the shops of Uptown Athens. From funky and fresh to vintage and chic, the quaint shops that line Court Street will refresh your home and closet for fall. Take a break from shopping and enjoy the shade under the trees of Ohio University’s historic College Green.

Sunday: Athens Eats! [And Drinks]

Skip the hassle of having your own barbecue and let Athens Eats! do the cooking for you. Dine on the lawn at TailGreat Park with selected food vendors from favorite local restaurants.

Free admission includes performances from Backwords, Appalachian Hillside Revolution and The Wild Honeybees. A KidsZone and Cruise-In means there’s something for the entire family to enjoy.

Monday: Explore the Outdoors

Savor the last of the warm temperatures and explore some of the scenic places in the area. Athens County is full of hiking and biking trails. Soak up the last summer rays by spending a day on the water or even at the beach at Burr Oak State Park, Stroud’s Run, Lake Hope or Lake Snowden.

Looking for a relaxing way to spend time with the family? Grab some street eats at one of the many area food trucks then head outside to picnic like a local.
