Athens local foods: a delicious reason to give thanks.

We have a lot to be Thankful for in Athens County and a sumptuous local food scene is certainly on the top of that list. If you want to bring a little bit of Athens to your table this Thanksgiving, or if you’re looking for a great local place to dine out, read on.

Let’s start with the bird. We can all agree that turkey tastes best when you know it is responsibly raised by a local farmer. At King Family Farm in Albany, Ohio, you can pick up your processed turkey on the farm where it spent most of its life  (just call ahead if you do). If you prefer the convenience of buying at a grocery store, the Farmacy on Stimpson Avenue in Athens also sells their turkeys.

Farmers Market Fall

The Athens Farmers Market offers a cornucopia of local flavor perfect for your Thanksgiving dishes.

Sourcing local side dishes and desserts. There’s no reason not to extend that local flavor to the side items that accompany your turkey. Despite the chill in the air, the Athens Farmer’s Market is still open on Wednesdays (until December 23) and on Saturdays year-round. Take a little pressure off yourself while rounding out your menu with rolls and homemade bread from the Village Bakery and dessert from Fluff (consider ordering their sticky buns for Thanksgiving morning to power you up for a full day of cooking and eating).

Toast the day with Athens County wine. White wine tends to be the recommended pairing with poultry, but whether your favorite kind is white, red or pink, you can find it locally in Athens County at either Shade Winery or Pleasant Hill Vineyards.
