Better clean your room; Mom’s coming to town this weekend! Mothers, aunts and grandmas will venture to Athens at the end of the week for Ohio University’s popular Moms Weekend. Although you’ll find many moms on Court Street this weekend, there are many other ways to have a fun, low-key Moms Weekend in Athens.

Local Drinks

With all the bar crawling that will be taking place on Court Street, going out for a drink with Mom may seem overwhelming. Head to the local breweries around town for a more laid-back scene. Little Fish Brewing Co. and Devil’s Kettle Brewing are two of the newest microbreweries in town, but they’ve already made a name for themselves. If craft beers aren’t Mom’s go-to drink, visit the West End Ciderhouse to try house-made ciders. Head to Athens’ Uncorked to taste a wide variety of wines and enjoy an open-mic night, karaoke style!

Dinner at Lake Hope Lodge

Treat Mom to dinner with a view! Enjoy a homemade meal and a glass of wine while gazing out over breathtaking Lake Hope. Known for its real pit BBQ, the Lake Hope Lodge takes casual dining to a whole new level. All meals are made completely from scratch, using many locally sourced ingredients. Work off dinner with a hike around the lake, which is the ultimate background for a Moms Weekend selfie!

Visit White’s Mill and the Dairy Barn

If you’re looking for a uniquely Athens experience this Moms Weekend, visit an Athens hidden gem, White’s Mill. Venture outside Ohio U. and explore this historic landmark, which sits along the Hocking River and is the perfect place to shop for local art, jewelry and gardening accessories. While you’re on the west side of town, head down Dairy Lane for the Dairy Barn Fest to shop hand-made pieces from 30 hand-selected artisans. Go on Friday for first dibs on items and to enjoy the Opening Reception at 5pm with hors d’oeuvres and a cash bar.

Athens Food Truck Tour

Athens is a town known for its great eats. What Mom might not know is that some of the best meals are being cooked and served out of a truck or cart! From burritos and hotdogs to soups and salads, Athens’ food trucks are a staple on our brick streets. Many vendors use locally-sourced food and are proud partners of our 30 Mile Meal program. Experience local eats, original to Athens, when you go on a food truck tour!

Parking

One of the best features of Athens is how walkable of a town it is. Park your car in a university lot on campus after 3 p.m. on Friday until end of the day on Sunday. Red and blue lots and students garages are restricted to those without a parking pass all weekend. For a map detailing lot locations, click here.

Lodging

When thousands of moms come to town on the same weekend, finding a room can be a challenge. However, many guests are unaware of the great cabins, cottages and B&B’s in Athens County. Check out the unique and charming places to spend a night off the beaten path in the rolling Appalachian hills—just minutes from Uptown!
