Athens has long been a center of clean energy innovation and technology. But even before that, living green was just a way of life. So naturally it stands to reason that Earth Day is kind of a big deal here. In fact, thanks to Earth Week Fest, there’s an Earth Day event happening just about every day this week. Here’s our guide to five ways to make this week the shiniest celebration of the Earth yet.

Catching the Sun | April 18, 7:00pm-9:00pm, Athena Cinema
A look at the global race to lead the clean energy future, Catching the Sun tells the stories of the trials and successes of those in the solar industry in the United States and China. Admission to the film is FREE (though a $5 donation is suggested). A discussion lead by a representative of Third Sun Solar will follow the screening.

Rural Action’s Earth Ball | April 22, 6:00pm-10:00pm, Eclipse Company Store
Whether you don flip flops or your fanciest outfit, you’re welcome to dance the night away at this year’s Earth Ball, featuring DJ Barticus and Bright at Night. When your dancing feet get tired, enjoy giant Jenga, food and cocktails. Be sure to check out the silent auction, which supports Rural Action.

Earth Day at the Wistendahl Native Plant Garden | April 23, 9:00am-3:00pm, Wistendahl Native Plant Garden
Grab the family and head to the Wistendahl Native Plant Garden for a day-long celebration of Earth Day. This FREE event features two workshops presented by native plant expert and garden designer Frank W. Porter, plus kid-friendly activities and tours of the native plant garden.

Green Revolution: The Power of Light | April 23, 1:30pm-4:30pm, Athens Community Center & Ohio Valley Museum of Discovery
Meet at the Athens Community Center at 1:30pm to learn about solar water pumps from Third Sun Solar and experiment outside with the power of light. Then head to the Ohio Valley Museum of Discovery to explore their Green Revolution exhibit and hear from experts in energy conservation.

Clean Energy Expo | April 23, 3:00pm-7:00pm, Athens Community Center
Learn about the many innovative companies here in Athens County that are working to bring a cleaner energy future for all. Hosted by UpGrade Athens County, the expo will also include an electric vehicle (EV) ride-and-drive session
