Regardless of whether you’re a local farmer, an outdoor enthusiast, or a visiting family of four, I’ve scoured through a collection of the latest and greatest events in Athens this week to allow you more time to live what you love. My suggestions come from opportunities that uniquely define Athens County as a place to play and as a region full of cultural experiences that can only be found in Southeast Ohio. We’ve survived the madness of Brew Week and turn our sights toward the waning days of summer. The flurry of visitors may have subsided, but only for the moment. There are several community-based events that take place, events that highlight the importance of coming together to work towards a common goal. It’s just one of the many characteristics that define Athens. Whether you’re visiting for an hour, a day or the whole weekend, stopping by these events will give you just a glimpse of what Athens has to offer.
If you’re from Athens County or taking the time to visit then you’ll want to take part in these 7 exciting events! Events are updated on a weekly basis. Check back next week for more unique listings you won’t find anywhere else.
Athens recently received a very exciting designation as a Bicycle Friendly Community from the American League of Bicyclists. With the recent renovations that Ohio University conducted on their portion of the Bikeway being finished, the Hockhocking Adena Bikeway is riding better than ever! To celebrate the longevity of the Bikeway and to Athen’s sustainable and healthy lifestyle, there’s going to be a ribbon cutting ceremony led by Mayor Paul Wiehl. Ohio University President Roderick McDavis will also be in attendance to commemorate the completion of Ohio University’s portion of the trail. You’ll want to arrive in true Athens’ fashion (by bike) to make the most of the event near Peden Stadium, as guests are invited on a short ride along the Hocking River to the East State Street Shelter House where goodies and freebies will be provided. You may be able to snag a free child’s helmet or walk away with some additional bike bling! The ribbon-cutting ceremony takes place at 10:30 AM and the rubber hits the road for the community ride at noon so tighten’ up your helmets and grease your chains to guarantee you’ll make it to the excitement!
Dine for Kids’ Sake 7/21
Big Brothers Big Sisters of Athens County is pairing up with a local favorite, 9 Tables! They’re hosting a special fundraising dinner full of savory and delicious meals (5 courses enough for ya?). The event is certainly designed to be fun, entertaining and helpful to the community! There aren’t too many options that provide you with an exciting and enjoyable atmosphere while providing the financial assistance needed for more than 300-at risk children. Tickets to the event are $75 per person with proceeds going to Big Brothers Big Sisters of Athens County which continuously provides children with guidance and support through a variety of summertime specials. Reservations are required so check it out and book your spot before this event happens to be snatched up by the lucky individual two-clicks ahead of you!
Summer doesn’t get any better than afternoons at the ball field, watching games and dollar-dog nights! Come out to Peden Stadium to witness our Southern Ohio Copperheads face off against that team up north-Northern Ohio Baseball Club. Not quite Michigan, but it’s going to be a heated rivalry nonetheless. Grab the kids and your baseball glove and make it to the stadium Thursday night for what’s sure to be a fast-hitting, lightning-pitched match.
Michael Fracasso at Donkey Coffee & Espresso 7/24
Musician and entertainer, Michael Fracasso, is set to put on a sure-fire performance Friday at Donkey Coffee. He’s continuously ignited the hearts and ears of audiences of all ages and hasn’t showed any signs of letting up. He’s coming through Ohio this week and is making a stop in Athens-are we surprised? No, I’d say ecstatic is more fitting. He’s going to be playing a live set in the swanky and most iconic college-coffeeshop in town, Donkey Coffee. You’ll want to get there early to reserve your spot among their dangerously comfortable couches and lounge chairs to witness the show.
A spoonful of sugar isn’t necessary to get you through this performance of the Disney classic, Mary Poppins! Conducted by the Ohio Summer Theater, Mary Poppins has several showings throughout the week, but if you’re searching for something new and rarely experienced but always over-due, then come out Friday for a live performance of the Julie Andrews’ classic. I’m guessing it’s been awhile since you’ve last seen the movie and if you’re unfortunate enough to have never seen a live performance, let’s change that! A childhood classic and a timeless favorite, Mary Poppins deserves your attention and a viewing.
This year, the Athena Cinema accomplishes an epic milestone that showcases the timeless spectacle that the movies and cinema has on each of us. The Athena celebrates 100 years of movie magic and continued excellence as a successful outlier in the cinema industry. One of the few remaining, classic cinemas, The Athena has promised to show movies from decades past that continue to capture the hearts and minds of both young and old. This week’s special showing is Breathless (1960). Below is a short and sweet synopsis taking from the Athena’s website:
Petty thug Michel (Jean-Paul Belmondo) considers himself a suave bad guy in the manner of Humphrey Bogart, but panics and impulsively kills a policeman while driving a stolen car. On the lam, he turns to his aspiring journalist girlfriend, Patricia (Jean Seberg), hiding out in her Paris apartment while he tries to pull together enough money to get the pair to Italy…
30 Mile Meal Month | Week 3 Farmers Market Week
Join us for a month-long celebration of the locally produced foods that make Athens County such a delicious place to be. Each week highlights a theme that centers around the people who grow, sell and cook food and spirits within a 30-mile radius of Athens, Ohio. July is when we pay our appreciations towards those that make the movement possible.
If you can’t make the events this week and still want the experience, there’s no need to worry. There are several ongoing events I’ve listed to keep the good times rollin’ well after the work week is through.
Quilt National 2015 Now through 9/7
Stop by the Dairy Barn Arts Center to immerse yourself into the world of artistic quilting. The exhibit at Quilt National displays a reverence for the lessons taught by the makers of the heritage quilts. You may go for the quilts, but you’ll stay for the culture. The Dairy Barn is an Athens’ icon and has helped shape the regions’ art scene for decades and we’re sure that its continued influence will last for decades to come.
Chesterhill Produce Auction, Mondays and Thursdays through October
The Chesterhill Produce Auction was born from nothing more than an idea. An idea to remind a community about the importance of farming and cooperation. As the idea grew and the auction began to increase in popularity, the CPA brought to light the importance of food in a community. Food brings people together. Chesterhill is a must see for those interested in self-sustainable living and wholesome organic produce. It’s an ideal one-stop shop for those that love to can and preserve their food. Here’s a video for CPA’s full story.
Athens Farmers Market Wednesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays
The Athens Farmers Market remains one of the state’s largest outdoor markets as well as an Athens’ staple. It’s a must see for those searching for fresh, local produce and the area’s passionate culture. You’ll not only find culture, but friendly conversation and a basket full of knowledge on a variety of growing techniques as well as the farmers’ own tips and tricks on preparing their goods for your dinner table.
Nelsonville Farmers Market, Saturdays through October
Stroll through the Nelsonville Farmers’ Market to purchase the season’s freshest produce, yummy baked goods and a couple of plants for your own vegetable garden. Take advantage of the summer sun and abundance of rain we’ve been having in the area. The weather may be troublesome at times, but it’s great for the thirsty veggies in the fields all day. The farmer’s market is sure to be teeming with fresh produce and meats as animals are fattening up off the thick grass grown in this especially wet summer.
