Ohio breweries will take over the taps in Athens from July 10-18 during the 10th annual Ohio Brew Week, a nine-day celebration of Ohio beers. Pair the best Ohio craft brews with super-local food during what is likely the most delicious week to visit Athens in 2015.
Athens has more than 30 bars, many of which will be pouring Ohio brews. Brew Week also coincides with 30 Mile Meal Restaurant Week, offering visitors a perfect time to pair Ohio beers with fantastic cuisine, made with fresh, local ingredients, produced just miles down the road.
To help plan your trip to Athens, we’ve put together a quick preview of what’s in store for this 10th anniversary year of Ohio Brew Week.
30 Mile Meal Restaurant Week: The 30 Mile Meal highlights foods and spirits crafted within a 30-mile radius of Athens and is the nation’s first “super-local” food campaign. Restaurants and food trucks that participate in the initiative will feature special menus all week, some featuring beer-infused dishes, and host pairing events. Visit Athens icons such as Casa Nueva, Jackie O’s Pub & Brewery and O’Betty’s Red Hot! July 12-18. For a list of participating restaurants, click here.
Rock-N-Roast: Kick off Brew Week at the 5th annual Rock-N-Roast at the Ohio University Inn and Conference Center. Sip on a Rock & Roast Session IPA by Columbus-based Elevator Brewing Company, an exclusive release that’s been deemed “the official beer of the 2015 Rock-N-Roast.” It pairs perfectly with the evening’s main entrée: Classic smoked barbecue! Friday, July 10, Ohio University Inn and Conference Center, 5-9:30 p.m.
Homebrew Competition: Stop by the Homebrew Competition, which is open to all Ohio home brewers and is sanctioned by the Beer Judge Certification Program. New this year: All beers that make it to the “Best of Show” round will be eligible for the Brewer’s Choice Award. The winner will be invited to help brew their beer in Athens on Little Fish Brewing Company’s 10-barrel system. Saturday, July 11, Grover Center, Ohio University, Room W115, 9 a.m.
Patrick Conway, co-founder of Great Lakes Brewing Company: Meet the man behind Ohio’s first craft brewery: Great Lakes Brewing Company! Find out when his love of beer began and how he was inspired by his travels in Europe to open a brewery in his hometown of Cleveland. Monday, July 13, at Jackie O’s Public House, 22 W. Union Street. Keg tapping at 5 p.m.; speaker at 5:30.
Brew BQ: Come out for a Brew BQ! Enjoy a craft beer garden featuring Great Lakes Brewing Company, Mt. Carmel Brewing Company, Thirsty Dog Brewing Company, Portsmouth Brewing Company—and more! Sample local cuisine from restaurants that support the 30 Mile Meal and jam to live music from The Wild Honeybees. Friday, July 17th, Athens Train Depot, West Union St. and Depot St., 4-10 p.m.
The Last Call Street Festival: Court Street in Uptown Athens transforms into a two-block beer garden, featuring 25 Ohio craft breweries and more than 75 unique craft brews, at The Last Call Street Festival. Celebrate another successful Ohio Brew Week with beer, music, food and art. Saturday, July 18, Uptown Athens, 2-10 p.m.
Come and stay awhile! Make a night or a weekend out of your trip, and stay at one of our cozy B&Bs, cottages or cabins. It’s just a short walk Uptown from a nearby hotel, too. And of course, enjoy your time responsibly and call a cab for a safe ride back to your room.
