Ohio Brew Week Event Breakdown

Ohio Brew Week will be celebrating its 13th annual year as a premiere 9-day festival showcasing over 200 craft beers from all over the state. The festival is well-known throughout Ohio and welcomes hundreds of brewers and thousands of attendees from all over the region. OBW features over 90 events with some of the more recognized events including: Rock ‘n’ Roast, Brew BQ, and the Last Call block party.

However, the festival has many other events aimed to suit the need for every visitor of the town. This guide will categorize some of the larger events to help you decide how to schedule your visit and enjoy the most the festival has to offer!

Saturday, July 14

4 p.m. – 8 p.m. | Betties & Brews: Dog Days of Summer
Appalachian Hell Betties vs Hades Ladies (from Marietta, OH)
A portion of proceeds will benefit New Beginnings Animal Shelter and will feature a PUPPY KISSING BOOTH and ADOPTABLE PETS! Doors open at 4, game starts at 5. 

6 p.m. – 8 p.m. | The Brew Choo Choo
Join Ohio Brew Week for the return of the Brew Choo Choo! This past favorite will be making its triumphant return to the Hocking Valley Scenic Railway thanks to Great Lakes Brewing Company and Land-Grant Brewing Company. Follow the link to buy tickets!

Monday, July 16

6 p.m. – 7 p.m. | Keg Tapping Ceremony
Hosted in Jackie O’s brewpub side, don’t miss the annual keg tapping of Sparbock – a dark amber bock ale brewed by Jackie O’s each year to commemorate one of Ohio Brew Week’s originators, Jon Sparhawk. Hear from the Ohio Brew Week Executive Director Brandon Thompson about this year’s developments and what’s in store.

Wear your Hawaiian Shirt in honor of the founder of Ohio Brew Week! Wear a Hawaiian shirt and do something positive for someone to honor of one of the founders and the inspiration for Ohio Brew Week, Jon Sparhawk.

Wednesday, July 18

6 p.m. – 8 p.m. | Top Deck Dinner
Ohio Brew Week in collaboration with Corner on Union and Rhinegeist brings you the first Top Deck Dinner on top of the Athens Parking Garage! Enjoy a seated fine dining beer pairing on the top level of Athens with a four course meal provided by Corner on Union and Rhinegeist brews. Purchase tickets through the link!

Thursday, July 19

4 p.m. – 8 p.m. | The Pigskin’s 9th Annual Pig Roast
With a name like “The Pigskin,” you bet they bring the whole hog every Ohio Brew Week. This annual event is not to be missed.

Friday, July 20

4 p.m. – 11 p.m. | Brew BQ
Hosted at the Athens Train Depot, come enjoy a multitude of food vendors, live music and of course, craft brews. This year’s performers are: Steve Zarate, the Borderline Something and Shouts and Whispers.

Saturday, July 21

12 p.m. – 11:59 p.m. | Last Call
An all-day block party highlighting all the craft brews the whole week had to offer. The block party occupies Court Street from Washington Street down to Carpenter Street, with live music throughout the day.

Meet the Brewer

With dozens of different brewers debuting beers during Brew Week, it’s only fair that attendees would have the chance to meet and speak with some of them throughout the festival. Several bars host events over the festival to accomplish just that.

Tuesday, July 17

All Day | Great Lakes “Major League” Movie Night
The Cat’s Eye Saloon will be showing Major League all day while several Great Lakes members talk about their products.

6 p.m. – 8 p.m. | Maple Lawn Pint Night + Meet the Brewer
Grab a pint and check out some of Pomeroy’s best offerings at the Overhang.

6 p.m. – 8 p.m. | Wild Ohio Meet the Brewer
Try Wild Ohio’s tea beers and speak with the brewers at the Crystal.

5 p.m. – 6 p.m. | Beer & Brats with Fat Head’s
Join The Cat’s Eye Saloon and the Fat Head’s crew for the perfect OBW staple! 

6 p.m. – 8 p.m. | Meet the Br3w3r
Dave and Amy from Brewery 33 will be available to talk about their new Hocking Hills region brewing operation at the C.I.

6 p.m. – 8 p.m. | Royal Docks Pint Night + Meet the Brewer
Hosted at the Overhang, come get a pint and a chance to get the full Royal Docks experience.

Thursday, July 19

5 p.m. – 6 p.m. | Beer & Brats with Great Lakes
The Cat’s Eye and Great Lakes team up to bring you Great Lakes signature Dortmunder Brats with fixins. Limited supplies. $6 for 1 pint/snifter of Great Lakes brew and 1 brat.

6 p.m. – 8 p.m. | Platform Meet the Brewer
Platform Brewing will be at the Crystal from 6-8. We’ll have 4 Platform beers on tap and a brewer will be here to talk beer and give out Platform pint glasses and swag.

6 p.m. – 7:30 p.m. | Wolf’s Ridge Meet the Brewer
Pint night with swag! Wolf’s Ridge Brewing will be here passing out goodies and pint glasses while supplies last.

Special Releases and Tap Takeovers

There’s no better time for local and statewide breweries to unveil new and exciting beers than Ohio Brew Week. This year features a wide array of new releases and collaborations between local brew masters and larger breweries.

Fri 13-Fri 20 All Day | 8 Days of Barrels and Burgers
Devil’s Kettle will be showcasing a different barrel-aged beer every day for the first 8 days of Brew Week paired with a different burger daily from The Kitchen inside Devil’s Kettle.

12 p.m. – 11 p.m. | Bottle Release: Learn’d Astronomer & Down Yon Holler
Learn’d Astronomer is a wine barrel aged sour ale with raspberries. And Down Yon Holler, well, you’ll just have to wait and see! Visit Little Fish Brewing Co. for this special release.

6 p.m. – 11 p.m. | Little Fish and Wolf’s Ridge Collab
Little Fish and Wolf’s Ridge will be debuting a Lichtenhainer stye beer just for Ohio Brew Week. Specialty Wolf’s Ridge beers will also be available on this night only. Come enjoy this limited-offering at the C.I.

7 p.m. – 11:30 p.m. | Cat’s Eye Saloon + Christain Moerlein “Hazy Eye-PA” Collab
Join us at The Cat’s Eye for a tapping of a collaboration beer made by John Ellis from The Cat’s Eye and Kyle Falhaber and Albert Sheets from Christain Moerlein Brewery. Hazy Eye-PA. It is a Hazy Wheat Session IPA.

Sixth Sense Brewing in Jackson has been making waves since hopping on the scene in 2017. They rock a range of styles, but “Murk Juice” hazy IPA has garnered huge buzz. Hosted by the Pigskin.

Millstone BBQ hosts North High beers all day for the final day of Ohio Brew Week 2018.

6 p.m. – 9 p.m. | Nut Smasher Keg Tapping at the Pigskin
Willoughby Brewing Co.’s Nut Smasher is an Imperial Stout, brewed with inspiration from their award-winning Peanut Butter Cup Coffee Porter. Seven types of malts combine with fresh- roasted coffee, chocolate and peanut butter.

Join us for a four course meal highlighting Henry Jochem of Primaterra Farm.  Becky Clark, Owner-Chef of The Kitchen at Devil’s Kettle and Pork & Pickles, will prepare a family course meal featuring the poultry and produce from the farm. Cameron Fuller, Owner-Brewer of Devil’s Kettle Brewing will thoughtfully pair beers with each course.
Guests will enjoy a brewery tour, a talk from the farmer with slideshow, and a four course meal with pairings.

These entertaining tours give participants the fascinating histories of the Uptown bars and buildings, while providing them with the chance to share their stories. Long-time Asylum employee, George Eberts, shares funny and poignant stories as well as the remarkable history of the Athens Asylum. These informational and entertaining tours provide an intimate look into the methods of mental health treatment in the 19th and 20th Centuries, and are one of the most popular programs offered by the History Center. Join us at the Athens Country Club for the WOUB Golf Tournament! Your registration includes greens fees, cart, continental breakfast, lunch, and as an Ohio Brew Week event there will be brew tasting stations around the course!
