Ohio University’s alumni, along with their family and friends, are returning to Athens this week for Homecoming. This year, Homecoming is Oct. 3-8, and thousands of past and present Bobcats are expected to head home this weekend.
“All Roads Lead Home” is this year’s Homecoming theme. As alumni are preparing to return, here are six things to know about Homecoming before heading to Athens.
Where to stay: Although many alums would likely love to stay in their first residence hall, we’re not sure current students have enough room for you. There are many hotel options, cozy and unique bed and breakfasts, cabins and camping spots to choose from.
Where to park: The Ohio University Alumni Association has a limited number of daily parking spots available during Homecoming. There are also free parking options in dark green and purple university lots after 5 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 7, or park in the Baker University Center Garage, the fairgrounds and Athens City Parking Garage in Uptown Athens.
Where to eat: Everyone who’s ever been to Athens knows finding a local restaurant to enjoy in isn’t hard. There are dozens of options, and each alum has his or her favorite eatery. Some classics include Casa Nueva, Bagel Street Deli, Burrito Buggy, Court Street Diner and The Pub.
Where to hear bands, see floats and join the crowd: The Homecoming Parade is Saturday, Oct. 8, starting at 10 a.m. Visitors will be in awe at the spirited floats, banners and displays that represent both Ohio University and the Athens community. Check out the 2016 parade route.
Where to celebrate: Tailgating is synonymous with football, and there are several opportunities to tailgate before Saturday afternoon’s football game against rival Bowling Green. There are several tailgate events for specific student groups and colleges, as well as the Bobcat Bash at Pepsi Tailgreat Park. Then head into Peden Stadium and cheer on the Bobcats – not to mention an amazing halftime show from the Most Exciting Band in the Land, the Marching 110!
Where to see Bobcat pride: Throughout Homecoming week, many businesses in are participating in the Paint the Town Green contest. They’ve decorated their storefronts with Bobcat spirit that you won’t want to miss!
