As we pack up our parkas and store away our snow boots, Athens County visitors and residents eagerly await the blooming of flowers and the rise of temperatures. To celebrate longer days and warmer weather, we drafted some perfect spring activities to do in and around Athens.
Get moving along the Hockhocking Adena Bikeway
If you’re looking for an active way to enjoy the weather and views, grab your bike or lace up your shoes and head to the Hockhocking Adena Bikeway. Start at the bikeway in Athens, in front of the Athens Community Center on East State Street, and you’ll pass Ohio University’s campus and then disappear into the serene woods along the Hocking River leading you all the way to Nelsonville. The best part about the bikeway during the spring? The Japanese cherry blossoms!
Explore at Strouds Run
Warmer weather means more exploring. Strouds Run offers kayak, canoe and paddle board rentals for the water explorer. As trees begin to bare their leaves, spring marks the perfect time to enjoy the beauty of the outdoors. Enjoy the beach area and catch some rays.
Picnic at Lake Snowden
Grab some food from a local 30 Mile Meal restaurant or a local Athenian food truck before heading to Lake Snowden. The lake covers approximately 136 acres offering camping, boating, fishing, picnicking and swimming. The serene setting reveals natural beauty while maintaining the convenience of being just 5 miles from Athens, Ohio. The shelter houses, restroom facilities, beach, shoreline fishing holes, and fish hatchery make Lake Snowden a full-featured recreation park.
