Spring has sprung and with it comes a warm welcome to the newly budded flowers and native plants that visitors can find at the Wistendahl Native Plant Garden, which can be found between the Athens Visitors Bureau and the Athens Community Center. All plants aside, there’s several great events this week for the theatrical buffs, including a poetry read and a performance of the Little Mermaid. Local food loves warm weather and the Athens Farmers Market is no exception. Look forward to getting outdoors while you can!
Savage Art Gallery is set to host their first of many monthly poetry reads that are open to the public. Grab yourself a chair and some friends to sit in on this fun and relaxing chance to hear the words others in the community. The event is free, and is an excellent opportunity to step out of your comfort zone and into someone else’s shoes as you listen to others tell their poetic tales. The event runs from 7:30 pm to 9:00 pm at the Savage Art Gallery, located in Nelsonville.
Courtesy of Ohio University Performing Arts Series, we’re excited to welcome Ira Glass to the Athens area. Ira Glass is the host and creator of the public radio program This American Life. The show is heard each week by over 2.2 million listeners on more than 500 public radio stations, with another 1.5 million downloading the podcast. Ticket costs are $25 for students, $27 for seniors, and $30 general admission. Listen and understand to just why This American Life is the best podcast in America! The event starts at 7:30 pm in OU’s Blackburn Templeton Memorial Auditorium.
The Athens Farmers Market can be found year round on East State Street, but with the weather warming up there’s less of a reason to miss it! Join local farmers and foodies every Saturday from 9:00 am to noon to have your pick of the freshest fruits and vegetables from around the county. Guests can also count on freshly baked breads, jellies, jams and an assortment of other locally crafted goods. The temperature’s are set to soar this weekend, you should start your Saturday bright and early at the renown Athens Farmers Market!
ABC’s The Little Mermaid 3/11-13
Join Ariel, King Triton’s daughter, and the rest of the Athenian Berean Community Players as they set course for an adventure like no other! Follow the ABC Players as they tell the story of how King Triton’s youngest daughter trades her fins for feet in the epic quest to find her love, Prince Eric, in the wide world above the waves! Shows are hosted on Friday and Saturday nights at 7:00 pm on March 11th and 12th, along with a matinee performance taking place on Sunday, March 13th at 2:00 pm.

The Souper Bowl 3/13
You won’t want to miss the 16th Annual Souper Bowl, happening this Sunday at the Athens Community Center! It’s not hard to believe that this is the most fun of any of the fundraisers that take place in Athens County. You’ll have a wide variety of beautifully handcrafted ceramic bowls to choose from. Attendees will have their choice of the best soups, breads and desserts in Athens County! That may sound like the best part, but we won’t stop there! The best part is that all proceeds go to the Athens Mediation Service, which specializes in providing training for conflict resolution. There will be live piano and jazz playing throughout the event as well. Tickets are only $25, so please, join others in attending The Souper Bowl for good music, good food, and good people.
