When the school year comes to a close, many Ohio University students head back to their hometowns. For three long months they dream of being back in Athens. So why leave?! Many who stay in town for the summer sessions will say it is one of the best times to be in Athens. Here are some of the best reasons to spend a summer in Athens.

Nonstop cool summer events
Students say that a summer in Athens is “the best kept secret” for a reason! The season kicks off with the Nelsonville Music Festival, a weekend-long event featuring amazing national artists on multiple stages, set in the rolling Appalachian hills. A few weeks later, hit Court Street for Boogie on the Bricks, a FREE community music and arts festival. In July, taps in bars all over Athens will feature different Ohio craft beers during Ohio Brew Week, which attracts brewers, farmers, distributors and beer lovers from around the state. There’s an event almost every weekend in the summer!

Go out to the ball game
Nothing says summer like watching America’s favorite pass time with a hot dog in one hand and a cold beer in the other. The Southern Ohio Copperheads are one of 11 teams in the Great Lakes Collegiate Summer League, and happen to play at Ohio University’s baseball field! Tickets are affordable and the games are a ball! Take a date or a group of friends and see who catches the most foul hits throughout the summer.

Get out on the water
When the weather gets hot, head to the lake to cool off. Go to Strouds Run State Park for a relaxing day at the beach. If sand between your toes isn’t your thing, grab a canoe, kayak or paddle board, and hit the water. Burr Oak State Park, Lake Hope State Park and Lake Snowden are scattered around Athens County and provide endless summer adventures.

Pedal along the river
Sunny skies mean it’s time to add air to your tires and hop on your bicycle. The Hockhocking Adena Bikeway is one of the most beloved paths to ride in Athens, running alongside the Hocking River. The 21-mile bikeway leads riders through Athens, all the way to Nelsonville. Make a pit stop at Little Fish Brewing, Devil’s Kettle or Jackie O’s along the way for an ideal Athens afternoon.

Go to your favorite watering hole
Just because school is no longer is session doesn’t mean your favorite watering hole won’t be as fun as ever! In fact, in the summer, lines aren’t as long, Uptown Athens patios are open, and cooling drinks are flowing. Summer may become your favorite season in Athens! You’d be surprised by the familiar faces you’ll run into, and get ready to meet new friends who are also summering in Athens.
