These Woods Aren’t Sleeping…

When strangers find themselves in Athens County they will often describe a feeling…something they can’t really put into words.

Some say this is the spirit of Athens County — its ghosts, legends and special aura. This “feeling” made Athens County an incredibly popular spot for spiritualists, occult members, and novice ghost hunters in the late 1800s, and that reputation still lives on today.

Mt. Nebo & The Koons Spirit Room

During the mid-1800s this Athens family became famous for holding incredibly successful seances in their humble home on a ridge top in Athens, called Mt. Nebo. The highest point in Athens County, Mt. Nebo is legendary.

The West State Angel

The West State Cemetery is home to the Angel of the Unknown Soldiers, a gravestone commemorating the unidentified soldiers interred in the cemetery.

Wilson Hall & Room 428

Legend has it that school officials deemed the room uninhabitable after students reported objects flying off of shelves and smashing into walls, doors opening and closing, and sightings of the ghost of a student who once lived in room 428.
