The Raccoon Creek Watershed covers nearly 700 square miles in 6 counties (Hocking, Athens, Vinton, Jackson, Meigs, and Gallia). There is significant damage due to Acid Mine Drainage (AMD) from pre-regulation coal mining, which severely harms the aquatic habitat and kills fish and insects that live in the streams. The Raccoon Creek Partnership is a watershed group that works on remediation and promoting water recreation activities.
