Tour Historic Homes of Athens County
You’ve probably wondered about the castle-like home on Athens’ east side, visible from the bypass near East State Street. What’s it like on the inside? Curious, aren’t you!
The public has a unique opportunity to visit the historic Zenner House and others on the 2015 Holiday Historic Home Tour, “The Elegant East End” on Sunday, December 6th from 1-4pm. The tour is designed to benefit the Athens County Historical Society and Museum.
The tour will include three homes from the 1920’s and a later model built in the early Athens subdivision referred to as the Grandview Highlands. The first house in the subdivision, a graceful Georgian Revival with an impressive stairway, was built in 1927 for the prominent Beasley family, exceptionally successful grocers.
Another home on the tour was built as a family home for the founders of Lawhead Press, a full service commercial printer serving Athens, Parkersburg and Columbus.
The famous Zenner house was built in 1929 by Zenner and Company Wholesale and Retail Dealers in Dry Goods and Clothing. A formal garden enhances the exterior while retaining an elegant and refined décor inside.
A 1950’s ranch reinvented as a modern 21st century open space home for an artist completes the list of elegant homes.
Tickets are available at the Athens County Historical Society and Museum, 65 North Court Street, Athens, Ohio 45701 or at any of the homes on the day of the tour. Call Eli at 740-592-2280 for ticket information.
