2015 All Athens County Photo Contest

Date(s) - June 11, 2015 - July 06, 2015
All Day

Class Gate

Have you ever witnessed a special moment, and with a camera and just the right light, captured it all? Good photographs can strengthen an opportunity to teach, inspire, record special events or history and perhaps just reveal the spectacular beauty of a farm, woods or wetland. To recognize individuals who use this tool effectively and creatively, the Athens Soil and Water Conservation District will again host its annual All Athens County Photo Contest in 2015.

In past years, we have created a calendar with our top 13 photos, therefore we have added seasonal categories. Seasonal photos that reflect Athens County’s many agricultural practices, its abundant natural beauty and rich cultural traditions in any season are all welcome. Photos do not need to be taken in calendar 2015.

Deadline for Entry is July 6, 2015

Photo Contest Guidelines:

Who can enter?

The contest is open to amateur photographers of all ages who are residents of Athens County, Ohio. Each participant may enter as many as three photographs.

Photographs become the property of Athens SWCD and Athens SWCD reserves the non-exclusive right to use these photographs in District publications or for other promotional purposes. Photographs remain available for the photographer’s personal or professional use. Entrant should keep digital records, negatives or extra prints of their photographs as photos entered can not be returned.

In what form must my photos be entered?

Photos must be entered in a digital format, as a jpeg or tiff file only. Do not send photo reproductions from printed publications. If not emailed, they should be burned to a CD and mailed with the entry and release forms* to:

Athens SWCD Photo Contest, 69 South Plains Road, The Plains, Ohio 45780.

Original, completed and signed entry and photo release forms must be received to be eligible for the contest.

Photos must have been taken at an Athens County, Ohio location and/or event. Images must not have been digitally altered in any way other than necessary burning and cropping. Please note that photos taken with wide-angle or landscape lens will still be printed in a 5 x 7 format.

*Carry a copy of the photo release form with you as you take pictures. This is an important document so that the photos can be used by the Athens SWCD for outreach program materials etc. It must be received by this office to make your photo eligible for judging.

When are my entries due?

All entries and forms sent by mail must be postmarked by July 6, 2015. Those pictures sent by email must be sent no later than midnight, July 6, 2015. Note: Photos are not limited to images taken in 2015. Photos can be taken at any time of the year as long as they are taken in an Athens Co. location and/or event. Indicate season entered for each photo (spring, summer, fall, winter) in the photo description section of the entry form.

When will winners be announced?

The 1st Place and honorable mention selections will be announced in mid-August.

Judging Standards:

Photos will be judged on technical merit and composition. Semi-finalists in each category will be selected by a panel of judges through the Athens SWCD office. Top winner and 12 honorable mention finalists, will be selected with public vote at the 2015 Athens County Fair Agricultural/Natural Resources Tent during the county fair in August. For technical merit, judges may check if the photo is well-framed, properly exposed, sharp and clear. For composition, judges determine if the photo features a recognizable center of interest, action, imagination and creativity.
