Cyclist riding through mountain biking trails in Athens

The Best Way to Explore Athens is on Two Wheels

The 2016 Gravel Rouser Classic is a four-day event that features cycling events on gravel roads and trails in and around Athens, Ohio.

Cyclists may choose to do all the events, or may pick and choose as they please.

Event #1: Bean Hollow Breakdown

Date: Thursday, March 17
Start Time: 5 p.m., registration begins at 4:30 p.m.
Meeting Place: 11595 Simms Road, Athens
Another chance for you to kick your own you-know-what on St. Patty’s Day. This route is mostly climbing on paved roads with one screaming gravel descent full of washboards and some mega-tight turns at full speed. Your pot of gold will be good brakes and strong climbing legs/lungs on this race course.
FREE event.

Event #2: Finger Rock Against the Clock

Date: Friday, March 18
Start Time: 5 p.m., registration begins at 4:30 p.m.
Meeting Place: Strouds Run State Park Shelterhouse #1 (second parking lot on your right on Strouds Run Road).
One of the best downhill courses from our fall series. Mostly flowy ridgetop and one BUSTER of a climb/hike then the famous Finger Rock downhill to the finish. Save a little cuz there is a quarter mile of flat pedal hard to get you to the finish and turn off the clock that is hemorrhaging precious seconds. Mountain biking doesn’t get any better than this in Southeast Ohio, unless you like to climb.
FREE event.

Event #3: Gravel Rouser Classic

Date: Saturday, March 19
Start Time: 10 a.m. sharp (Registration begins at 9 a.m.)
Meeting Place: Kiser’s Barbecue at Eclipse Company Town near The Plains, Ohio (map)
Parking Information: Look for directional parking signage at Kiser’s
Gravel Rouser Survivors Barbecue: 3:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. at Kiser’s Barbecue at Eclipse (map)
Hilly ride to Lake Hope State Park and back. 45-ish-mile (round trip) ride plus optional short (4-10 miles) singletrack mountain bike race at the mid-point. Race will be time trial format. Course will be marked and maps provided. Ride at your own pace to and from Lake Hope. After riding to Lake Hope, either race or spectate before gorging at our snack station and then riding home.
Fee: $35 includes marked course, map, major snack options at Lake Hope and super delicious Gravel Rouser Survivors Barbecue dinner at Kiser’s afterward. Thank you Sean Kiser and Kiser’s Barbeque for hosting us again this year! Individuals who are not participating in the Gravel Rouser can pay $20 and enjoy the BBQ buffet. Beer will be available at a cash bar at Kiser’s.

Event #4: Grab & Git City Scramble and Donut Party

Date: Sunday, March 20
Start Time: 10 a.m. sharp. Registration begins at 9:30 a.m.
Meeting Place: Athens Bicycle, 4 W. Stimson Ave., Athens
Pack your backpack, sharpen your pencils and get ready to go back to school. At the start we’ll hand out maps and you’ll choose your route to five checkpoints in town. Your ride around town will include about 10-12 miles total as well as some pop quizzes and possibly flash cards. Make it back to the finish at the bike shop and enjoy a buffet of donuts and delicious, local Ridge Runner Coffee. We’ll tally the results and present awards and a prize table from Trek and Athens Bicycle. Who will our 2016 Wolfmen be?

This event has almost as much to do with luck as it has to do with fitness. Forget the performance anxiety and come join the fun. Any kind of bike will do for this event (not an off-road event). Food, beverages and podium awards sponsored by Trek and Athens Bicycle at the finish line.
Fee: $15 includes map, refreshments and party. Kids under 18 who are participating with an adult can race for $5.
