Athens Art Outside the Box – Call for Entries

AMAC is seeking up to 10 art designs to be applied onto vinyl wraps to cover traffic control boxes in Athens, Ohio.

AMAC encourages submissions of Athens specific artworks that will make Athens Art Outside the Box purely “Athens.”

  • A $500 honorarium will be awarded for use of each design.
  • Artists will be selected by jury process. Selected artists will not choose locations. Each selected artist will not be eligible for more than one location until removal occurs.
  • Wraps will be removed after 3-5 years, depending on condition. They may be removed at any time at the discretion of the City of Athens.
  • Selected artist designs (which can be computer designed images or scanned from illustrations, paintings, quilts, mosaic, photographed sculptures, photographs, or other) will be printed on to a vinyl wrap, and applied to the traffic boxes by the City of Athens.

Selection Criteria
Artists should bear in mind that the audiences will be broad-based and of all ages. Artwork should be appropriate
for display in a public place. The art should enhance its setting and help create a sense of place. Submissions that include

advertising or logos will not be considered. The jury will select public art that would not, when displayed, create a threat to public safety or create a hostile work environment for public employees.

Artwork will be displayed on traffic control boxes within Athens City limits. If selected for exhibition, location of individual designs will be recommended by AMAC with final approval by City Council.

Wraps will be removed after 3-5 years, depending on condition.

Each selected artists will be paid a $500 honoraria for the use of the completed, camera-ready design as provided by

the artist.

Submission Guidelines

Designs which can be computer designed images or scanned from illustrations, paintings, quilts, mosaic, photographed sculptures, photographs, or other should be prepared for the selection process as 5″ tall by L0″ wide JPEG images at 300 dpi.

Artists may submit up to five designs. Submissions must be turned in with the attached form. Name each JPEG file with the correlating number on the entry form, your last name, title, medium, year (example – 0lsmith-flowers-oiloncanvas-20l5jpg) Entry form and JPEG images my be dropped off at Arts West or emailed to

Once selected, artists will provide higher resolution images. Final digital submissions should be, at a minimum, 36″ x l-6″ at 600 dpi. Digital images that are smaller than the minimum size cannot be accepted and honorarium will be forfeited.

Artists may be asked to work with the vinyl fabricator in finalizing the design for installation. By submitting works, artists agree to grant permission to alter or crop work as needed.


Artists verify that the submitted designs are their own work and do not violate another’s copyright. Artists understand that if their artwork includes photography of partially or entirely recognizable people, they must provide the City of Athens with release statements from all parties.


Artists may submit up to five entries each.

Artists agree that the City of Athens may photograph works in the exhibit and use photos for promotional purposes.

Artists agree to sign a contract with the City regarding the use of each design.
