The works to be displayed are a series of paintings, screenprints and audio works. The intent of these works is to explore the intersections and self-actualizations of identity and Blackness.
Starbrick Cooperative Gallery Opening Night: Hidden Worlds Revealed IV by photographer Jim Shirey. Jim’s work with a macro-lens exposes a veiled and secreted world. His work invites the viewer through this veil by depicting natural objects as centers of power lying just beyond the physical limits of vision. Jim will be present to discuss his work and techniques. (8pm)
Paper Circle Opening Night: Roots. Plants take center stage as Ann Corley Silverman explores cultural roots and digs into the organic nature of life. Her passion for papermaking is intimately connected to plants and natural processes, and to paper’s role as a medium of human expression. She has recently been experimenting with the fiber found in the stalks of the okra plant. She took paper made from okra to a community Okra Festival in Alabama and asked people to write okra memories on it. The exhibit at Paper Circle is inspired by the gathering of those memories into a paper ‘quilt’ and by reflections on ideas of rootedness, both personal and communal. She provides an opportunity for visitors to make a ‘Nelsonville Quilt’ on a canvas of okra paper. In line with her theme, it has an image of a single taproot, waiting for the nourishment of local ideas.
The Majestic Anex: Ongoing with New Work each month by Majestic Members: Changeling. Plus: a talk by member Aaron Smith on processing film with coffee. (7pm)
