Celebrate Athens pop culture scene with ARTS/West and the Athens Arts, Parks and Recreation Department. The 4th annual Ratha Con: Athens Own Pop Culture Convention will be kick off on Friday, May 8th with a night at ARTS/West. Take in the opening of the pop culture art exhibit from 6pm–8pm, and stay for the screening of the short film Mining Moon by filmmaker Brian Morlean from British Columbia, followed by a screening of the comedy/sci-fi classic Galaxy Quest.
The main convention will take place on May 9th, 10 am – 5 pm, at the Athens Community Center and will feature special guest, Chalet Lizette Brannan, an up-and-coming star. She has already been in many projects including new shows for the Syfy network and has just signed to be in a new Star Trek project. Special effects make-up artist and sculptor, John Marks from Indianapolis, Indiana, will also be a special guest of the convention. Be sure to check out the many comic/graphic novel artists, including Travis Horseman, creator of Amiculus. Writer Cassandra Morgan, will be giving a presentation on self publishing and the Ghostbusters, WV Division will be bringing lots of fun for all.
There will be vendors selling comics and collectibles. Lego zip line races, lightsaber choreography, bullwhip demonstration, model making, RPG games, costume contest with trophies for the winners and for the first time, Quidditch matches. There is so much more. Admission is $10 for adults, $5 for kids 12 – 17, free for kids 11 and under with a paid adult. First 30 paid adult tickets will receive an exclusive Ratha Con poster by Stephen Richter.
After a day of fun at the convention there will be a night of fun at Casa Nueva Cantina. A costumed dance party will start at 10 pm – free admission for adults and $2 for underage patrons.
