Become a Citizen Scientist—Join the Backyard Bird Count
Grab your binoculars, field guide and a pencil and join Rural Action in the Great Backyard Bird Count (GBBC)! The GBBC is a program coordinated by Cornell’s Lab of Ornithology that relies on bird watchers of all ages to count birds all over the world. This gives ornithologists at Cornell real-time snapshots of bird populations across the globe.
Bird watchers of all experience levels are welcome, including children at least 8 years old.
This event has two stages.
Stage 1, 9:00am-11:00am. Meet at the Ohio University’s Compost Facility at the Ridges (Located at the end of Dairy Lane, Athens, Ohio) for a 2-hour morning birding session.
Stage 2, 1:00pm-3:00pm. Meet in front of Bird Arena (102 Oxbow Trail, Athens, OH 45701) on Ohio University’s campus where we will go for another 2-hour birding session around campus.
Celebrate the count at Jackie O’s BrewPub (22 West Union Street, Athens, Ohio 45701) at 3:30. Discuss findings, what the Great Backyard Bird Count is, and how our efforts will help better understand bird populations, and meet other birding enthusiasts.
