Best Hometown 2009

National Farmers Market Week: August 2-8, 2009!

Ohio Foodshed is a recently-launched project of Rural Action Sustainable Agriculture, which strives to create a user-friendly resource that will help to build a strong local food economy. Find the names and contact information of local growers, learn where regional community gardens are located, find restaurants that buy from local growers, and more!

The Chesterhill Produce Auction takes place on Thursdays at 4:00 pm, May 14 - October 15, 2009, and on Mondays June 8 - October 12. (on the week of May 18, the auction will take place on Wednesday instead of Thursday)

Need to source local food? Rural Action's Sustainable Agriculture program can help.

The Athens Independent Restaurant Association (AIRA), a group of locally-owned restaurants, purchases produce, meats and specialty items from both the Farmers Market and directly from local producers, giving diners some fresh, healthy alternatives when it comes to eating out.

The Village Bakery is one of many local businesses that is committed to providing healthy, delicious and sustainable foods to our community. In 2008, the Village Bakery:

  • Invested $40,000 in local organic produce
  • Invested $15,000 in regional farmstead cheeses
  • Invested $20,000 in Snowville Creamery milk
  • Invested $8,000 in sustainable seafood
  • Invested $50,000 in locally raised pork, beef, lamb, chicken and eggs
  • Invested $18,000 in fair trade organic coffee, chocolate and tea
  • Invested $170,000 in local workers, all of whom also support our local economy

If you want to begin producing or processing your own fresh vegetables and fruit, then participate in a workshop with Community Food Initiatives. They offer monthly workshops for all skill levels, and encourage the development of a strong local food system.
