Picnic Places

The rolling hills of Southeast Ohio make the perfect backdrop for a picnic!  Here are a few of our favorite locations:

Burr Oak State Park features over twenty-five miles of scenic hiking trails, picnic tables, grills, 500 feet of sandy beach, and a shelter house for the public use.

Lake Hope State Park, located in McArthur, is a nature lover’s dream. Picnic areas with tables and grills are scattered around the park in secluded areas. Two picnic shelters are available on a first-come, first-served basis or by reservation.

Lake Snowden has a grass and sand beach swimming area. Bring a blanket and enjoy the views.

Sells Park is tucked away just a few blocks off of East State Street in Athens. When you arrive, a small pond greets you after an easy walk up hill.  Benches tucked away in the trees give you the perfect spot to pause for some reflection.

Shade Winery is situated in Southeast Ohio’s Appalachian foothills. Bring your picnic any Friday or Saturday between 1 and 8 PM.

Strouds Run State Park is located in Athens County. Lakeside picnic areas offer picnic tables and cooking grates, along with 3 shelters. Hiking, bridle trails, swimming, or fishing – it’s all here.

Waterloo Wildlife Area is located in western Athens County and offers the trail less traveled to visitors.  Penrod Lake is a small but beautiful spot for a quiet picnic for kids and grown-ups alike.  This place is almost a secret!

Moonville Tunnel  Some say it’s spooky, but really it’s just a great spot for short hike and a picnic lunch!  All that ghost hunting will make you hungry, so pack a big basket….

Desonier Nature Preserve is located on the eastern side of Athens County, just off of US Rt. 50.  This is another trail less traveled location, and a great spot for a quiet commune with nature and a really good sandwich.

The Ridges Trails is one of the region’s most beautiful locations for a picnic.  Choose a bench on the trail, like the one near the giant tree with the low limbs (you’ll know it when you see it), or near the pond or creek on either end of the trail.  Or, find a beautiful spot near the main buildings of The Ridges.  If you really want to work up an appetite, hike up to Radar Hill and enjoy your sandwich and great views at the same time.
