6 Local Eats for Move-In Weekend

Sol Restaurant on East State Street in Athens, a great place to grab a bite to eat during a busy move-in weekend.

School is back in session and Bobcats from far and wide are arriving in Athens. Many students are move-in weekend veterans, having gone through the chaos once, twice or even three times before. However, many students and parents are newbies. After a long day of unpacking everyone’s worked up an appetite, so head to these Athens’ restaurants to avoid the Uptown crowd.

Sol Restaurant – 700 East State Street
An Uptown Athens favorite, Sol Restaurant recently opened a second location on East State Street. The new location has an expanded menu with even more delicious Caribbean-inspired dishes to choose from. Bright colors and the family-friendly atmosphere are the perfect setting for dinner with your Bobcat.

Kiser’s Barbeque – 1002 East State Street
If you ask the locals where the best pulled pork sandwich in town is, you’ll likely get Kiser’s Barbeque as your answer. Located in the Athens Mall, Kiser’s is a family owned and operated restaurant serving slow-roasted, pit-smoked BBQ. With a variety of sauces and sides to choose from, this may become your Bobcat’s new favorite restaurant.

Purple Chopstix – 371 Richland Avenue
For a uniquely Athens dining experience, head to Purple Chopstix for a meal created with locally sourced ingredients. Inside you’ll find colorful decorations from local artists on display. If the sun is shining, grab a seat outside on the patio, the bridge, or even across the water at the forest patio! Regardless, the variety of fresh dishes will help you unwind after move-in morning.

Larry’s Dawg House – 410 West Union Street
Upperclassmen will tell you that Larry’s Dawy House is must. Located off the beaten path, Larry’s serves all the classic diner items you could want including hamburgers, fried chicken, fish sandwiches and of course, foot long hot dogs. Bring your Bobcat here for a delicious meal, then stay for ice cream!

McHappy’s – 348 Richland Ave
Start move-in weekend on the right foot by picking up a dozen fresh donuts and pastries from McHappy’s. This local bakery has been providing Athens’ residents and students with sweet treats for decades. Your Bobcat will have no trouble making new friends in the dorm residence hall when they show up with a box of McHappy treats.
