With winter coming to an end soon, Athens County visitors and residents eagerly await the blooming of flowers and the rise of temperatures. To celebrate longer days and warmer weather, we drafted some perfect spring activities to do in Athens County.

Get moving along the Hockhocking Adena Bikeway

If you’re looking for an active way to enjoy the weather and views, grab your bike or lace up your shoes and head to the Hockhocking Adena Bikeway. Start at the bikeway in Athens, in front of the Athens Community Center on East State Street, and you’ll pass Ohio University’s campus and then disappear into the serene woods along the Hocking River leading you all the way to Nelsonville. If delicious Ohio craft beers entice you, you must experience Brewed on the Bikeway! All of Athens County’s breweries are conveniently located on or adjacent the bikeway, making for a sipping, sampling good time.

Explore at Strouds Run

Warmer weather means more time for outdoor exploring. Strouds Run offers kayak, canoe and paddle board rentals for the water explorer. As trees begin to sprout their leaves, spring marks the perfect time to enjoy the beauty of the outdoors. There are miles of hiking and biking trails to explore. You’ll find trails of all types, for every skill level, so bring the family! Getting together and getting back to nature is a beautiful way to welcome Spring.

 

Lake Snowden is a beautiful springtime spot.


Picnic at Lake Snowden

Grab some food from a local 30 Mile Meal restaurant or one of Athens’ many food trucks before heading to Lake Snowden. The lake covers approximately 136 acres offering camping, boating, fishing, picnicking and swimming. The serene setting reveals natural beauty while maintaining the convenience of being just 5 miles from Athens, Ohio. The shelter houses, restroom facilities, beach, shoreline fishing holes, and fish hatchery make Lake Snowden a full-featured recreation park.
